Más allá del muro. Lecturas fronterizas en un estado de emergencia.

Embaucadas con la fantasía de prosperidad que ofrecía la Nueva España, una serie de familias procedentes de las Islas Canarias fueron reclutadas y, posteriormente, trasladadas a San Antonio en 1731, por solicitud del Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo al Rey Felipe V. Estas familias viajaron primero a Cuba y luego a México pasando penalidades y peligros, que provocaron la muerte de varios de los miembros durante el trayecto. Los objetivos eran claros: mantener la soberanía en estos territorios, poblar un punto estratégico para evitar un posible ataque procedente de la Louisiana Francesa y contar con una mano de obra diligente y fiel (o una mera mercancía, que diría Marx). 300 años después la historia se repite.

Partiendo de este dato histórico, Más allá del muro propone la llegada de artistas canarios para "colonizar" nuevamente San Antonio uniendo, además, a artistas locales y otros procedentes de zonas geográficas que fueron de dominio español, como es el caso de Venezuela y México. Esta exposición pretende recordar y, al mismo tiempo, evidenciar la importancia de los flujos migratorios y, por ende, el enriquecimiento que genera la mezcla, ya sea desde un punto cultural o racial. Asimismo, se escruta con mesura el movimiento o la imposibilidad del mismo, procurando el debate en torno a la redefinición de las demarcaciones físicas, políticas y culturales. Si bien, hablar hoy de política de fronteras abiertas es imposible y descabellado, no estaría de más recordar que el actual sistema de divisiones territoriales ha sido marcado de manera ilegítima a través de conquistas o colonizaciones y ha sido aceptado inconscientemente y a perpetuidad por la ciudadanía.

Más allá del muro es una exposición que muestra la crueldad de la frontera y dialoga sobre supremacía, lenguaje(s) y poder. Dilapida el concepto de pureza y entrona la libertad de tránsito.

El Mes del Arte Contemporáneo (CAM) Exhibición Perenne 2018 une artistas en un intercambio intercultural entre San Antonio y las Islas Canarias. Los artistas en esta presentación fueron elegidos por el curador invitado de las Islas Canarias, Adonay Bermúdez, para una exposición en la Sala Hudson de Artpace.

Duped with the fantasy of prosperity projected onto the territories of New Spain, a series of families from the Canary Islands were recruited and later transported to San Antonio in 1731, at the request of the Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo to King Felipe V. These families traveled first to Cuba and then to Mexico, passing drawbacks and dangers, which caused the death of several of the members during the journey. The objectives were clear: maintain sovereignty in those territories, populate a strategic location to avoid a possible attack from French Louisiana and have a diligent and faithful workforce (or a mere commodity, as Marx would say). 300 years later history repeats itself.

Starting from this historical fact, Beyond the wall proposes the arrival of Canarian artists to "colonize" San Antonio again, uniting, in addition, local artists and other from geographical areas that were Spanish domain, as is the case of Venezuela and Mexico. This exhibition aims to remember and, at the same time, show the importance of migratory flows and, therefore, the enrichment generated by the mixture, either form a cultural or racial point of view. Likewise, the movement or its impossibility is scrutinized with care, seeking the debate around the redefinition of physical, political and cultural boundaries. Although, to speak today of open borders policies is impossible and far-fetched, it would not hurt to remember that the current system of territorial divisions has been crafted illegitimately through conquests or colonization and has been accepted unconsciously and perpetuity by the citizenship.

Beyond the wall is an exhibition that shows the cruelty of the border and talks about supremacy, language(s) and power. Dilapidated the concept of purity and enthrone the freedom to circulate.

The 2018 Contemporary Art Month (CAM) Perennial exhibition pairs artists in a cross-cultural exchange between San Antonio and the Canary Islands. The artists were chosen by Canary Islands-based guest curator Adonay Bermudez for an exhibition in Artpace´s Hudson Showroom.
