Desarticular
la identidad nacional es costumbre en la fotografía estadounidense: desde
Walker Evans hasta Meyerowitz la cámara ha funcionado como herramienta
desmaquillante. Hayfer Brea, fotógrafo emigrante, se une a esta tradición con #Untitled.
Lo hace lejos de los grandes relatos narrativos y visuales, con una mirada muy
suya: sosegada, concentrada, amorosa. El tricolor nacional y texano —estado en
el que vive—, se convierte en hilo conductor e interrogante: cuestiona, no
evade luces y sombras a la hora de mirar el carácter, la idiosincrasia del
sueño americano. Patriotismo y patriotería chocan en este libro. Chocan orden y
caos, fealdad y belleza. Desde allí, el título cobra nuevo sentido: lo que no
tiene nombre y, por tanto, no puede ser definido, invocado; lo que es todo y
nada al mismo tiempo.
Valiéndose
de objects trouvé, Brea nos habla de un país cuya historia moderna y
contemporánea se erige como espacio de contradicciones. Sus imágenes son una
revisión y una revisitación.

Dismantling national identity is a common
practice in American photography: from Walker Evans to Meyerowitz, camera has
been used as a make-up remover. Hayfer Brea merges this tradition with #Untitled.
He does so far away from the great narrative and visual tales and with his very
own vision: serene, focused, caring. The national and also Texan tricolor —the
state in which he lives—, becomes the common thread from a series that is
essentially a conundrum: it questions things, it does not elude the lights and
shadows when it is looking the personality, the idiosyncrasy of the American
dream. Patriotism and jingoism collide in this book. Order and chaos, beauty
and ugliness collide as well. Thus, its title gains a new meaning: what is
unamed and cannot be defined, invoked; what is everything and nothing at the
same time.
Using objects trouvé, Brea talks about a
country whose modern and contemporary history it is built as a space of
contradictions. His images are a review and a revisitation.
